As someone who has struggled with leaving the house since having PTSD, I’ve always wanted to write this post. Leaving the house can be a logistical or emotional nightmare for so many of us and it takes a huge toll on our lives; impacting our ability to socialise, explore and feel connected to the wider world.

The effect it can have on your mental health is huge. Not being able to leave the house has made me feel hopeless and isolated and scared. My agoraphobia is rooted in trauma from domestic abuse, which means I’m not so much scared of “outside” as I am of strangers and crowds. I miss my friends and family and being able to pass people in the street without feeling like they might attack me.
This post isn’t going to magic any of that away. I wish I could make things easier for all of us, but I do hope that it can help you feel like you’re getting a small kind of change of scenery, just for a minute.
I’ve tried to make the places on this list as accessible as possible, although they do require an internet connection and device such as a smart phone, PC or tablet. They are all free to visit, but some require sign up or offer optional additional purchases. Of course, it isn’t the same as really visiting these places, but I find it better than not going at all. For added ambience, consider using a free sounds app like Rain, Rain to set the mood.
With the UK seemingly headed for another potential national lockdown and with many of us shielding or isolating, it seems like there has never been a better time to put this together. I hope you find something that appeals to you somewhere on this list. Stay safe.

Travel is a privilege. I think 2020 has reminded many of us of that. While I have struggled to leave the house since having PTSD, I have also been lucky enough to experience trips, days out and holidays in my life. Not everyone has the opportunities I’ve had and I’m so grateful for them.
I hope we can all get back to exploring safely soon. Until then, I’m comforted by the fact that we can experience so much of the world’s beauty from our own homes. If you feel ready to start taking the first steps to utilising your own outdoor space, I recommend learning about connecting with nature through attracting wildlife to your own garden.
I know it might make some people sad to digitally go to the places they long for, but I think on balance it’s nice still to get virtually out and about.
What’s your favourite place on the list? Is there somewhere you’re planning to go or just longing for?

This list sounds fabulous, Anneli, thanks for compiling it. I’ll be working my way through it. Slowly, but surely.
I saw this post as soon as you published it and fell in love , we could all use a bit of escapism right now and this is just perfect x
Wow I love this post so much! Thank you!
I’m going to make a point of trying to take as many of these virtual trips as I can (even if lockdown ends before I’ve gone through the list).
I totally relate to panic in busy places, though I appreciate my experience that has provided a catalyst is not nearly as severe as yours.
Thanks for reaching out and sharing! Travel is indeed a privilege, and I’m lucky that, for the most part, I feel able to go for a walk in my local area and not be too caught up around the anxieties of people and places. I’m not exactly in a rush for “normal” to return, and society needs to understand that all operate at different paces and rhythms.
What a great idea for a blog post. But so perfect for the times we are living in.
Thank you so much for compiling this list! It is amazing! My father’s side of the family is from Croatia. I’ve never been to the touristy parts of the country, so I may need to check that one out. There is definitely something on this list (art/animals/music/architecture/nature) for everyone to enjoy!
These are such great ideas! Thank you for sharing them!

Thankyou so much. I’m feeling so down at the moment – I’m sure these will help xxxx
Quits job to spend all of the time watching the guide dogs nursery cam. This is an amazing list Anneli, I will 100% waste hours on these
Ahaha the nursery cam can be open in the tab right next to (in front of) your actual work!
I love this! So many amazing ideas, I’m probably gonna spend the rest of the day looking through them ahah 😍❤
🙂 I look at them regularly myself too!
Despite feeling trapped, I hadn’t even thought about simple stuff like Google Maps, or searching up virtual tours! o.O I’ll definitely be giving a few of these a go to feel a little less claustrophobic and trapped.
What a great blog idea!
Aww I’m so glad you found some of these helpful. I bet there are some great VR options out there too!
These virtual tours and visits have been wonderful, providing interest and relief during the lockdown So many to choose from. Each of the 100 visits offers so much choice to everyone. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching and learning along the way. Many thanks.
